Before I Was a Hairdresser I Envisioned Myself Being a Preschool or 3rd Grade Teacher… Then Realized This…

Once upon a time when I was younger, I would say I was very influenced by my kindergarten teacher. I loved that all we did was play outside and play house in the classrooms, and especially the cheese burritos we would get as a snack. I thought how cool these adults were. So much that my memory was always fun when I thought about those adults.

And then my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Hammer. She was like my real-life Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. She was sooo much fun, but also—not to mention—I think she might have been an adult that fostered individuality in how she dressed as an adult. I guess that’s why as youngsters we are very easily influenced. I remember the feeling of how cool she was when she would come to school in her kooky outfits, her short curly pageboy cut, and all of the accessories she would have. She was the teacher that wore all and any holiday attire to be festive! Well, I was like, “That seems cool!”

Well, fast forward to me now in my early 30s while I was in conversation with a friend, and she had mentioned her mom was a professor at ISU. I remembered, “Oh, how cool!” because of that nostalgic feeling or cool vibe I always thought… I had a rude awakening that I would never be a good teacher because I don’t even like kids. I do not like to play pretend, my patience is very limited. I mean, let’s be real for a minute—yapping toddlers with snot on their face or children asking “why” is just not in my wheelhouse of talents. Hahaha!

Safe to say, I am so happy that I chose to be my own version of a cool adult and artist!
